What is HTML?

Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) is the "language" used to build web pages. A browser (like Microsoft's Internet Explorer) is a piece of software that takes an HTML document and displays it as a web page.

What would I learn in an HTML class?

HTML is relatively easy to learn, you would most likely learn the basics of the syntax of the language and how to use it to create a page that looks like you want it to. You might also learn about how to prepare images for use on web pages, more details about good web page design, and/or how to use programs that automatically produce HTML for you (like Microsoft Front Page or Marcomedia Dreamweaver, so called WYSIWYG editor, What You See Is What You Get).

Who would want to take an HTML class, what jobs are available for someone knowledgeable about HTML?

Just as the web has become prevalent in many jobs, so has the need for people that can build web pages. Anyone wanting to do anything related to building and/or maintaining websites must have a strong knowledge of HTML. However, many people whose jobs are touched by their company's web presence could benefit from a basic understanding of HTML: from being able to create simple examples for your web team to see (which can then be easily added to your site by the team since you already did most of the work) to actually being able to modify the parts of the site that you are responsible for.

Building websites can be done for fun too. Many people like to build personal sites about themselves, their families, trips they have taken, clubs they are part of and/or their hobbies. The stronger your understanding of HTML the more you'll be able to do with these projects.
